Since 1958, the Noise Manual has been the premier resource for those interested in preventing workplace noise-induced hearing loss. Subsequent editions of the book appeared in 1966, 1975, 1986 and 2000 and each has continued to be a best seller with wide appeal across disciplines. In 2008, the AIHA Noise committee decided that a revised, updated and expanded 6th Edition of the book was warranted, especially in light of the new technologies and evidence-base emerging for the prevention of noise-induced hearing loss. The 6th edition contains 22 chapters in four sections: 1) fundamentals of sound, vibration, and hearing; 2) elements of a hearing loss prevention program; 3) noise interference and annoyance and 4) standards, regulations, and workers' compensation. Expert authors have updated the evidence-base for hearing loss prevention programs and contributed relevant new chapters. These new topics include chapters dedicated to brief high-level sounds such as impulse noise from gunfire; the complex interactions of noise and chemicals in the context of ototoxicity and otoprotection, hearing protector fit-testing and attenuation estimation procedures, expansion of hearing conservation efforts beyond the workplace and the global burden of noise-induced hearing loss. The information in each chapter has been written with the goal of providing an acoustical reference.
