Emerging Technologies - When There Are No Rules, It's All in the Science and Engineering (AIHce EXP 2019 OnDemand)
	Recorded at AIHce EXP 2019 Earn 1 Contact Hour Storytelling has been used for thousands of years to relay knowledge from one generation to the next. The stories often include morals and lessons learned to help prevent mistakes and guide choices. This same principle can be utilized in the Industrial Hygiene field as new generations rise to carry the H&S banner in the workplace and as new technologies emerge. Parallels can be drawn from a history of lessons learned into new applications. The focus is not necessarily the story telling, but more the opportunity to learn from real world applications and lessons learned. Storytelling can be used to communicate how we managed through issues. Using a story-telling approach, the presentations will describe lessons learned in the following situations: 1) New or changing Occupational Exposure Limits, setting limits based on toxicity data; 2) Emerging hazards with nanomaterials and prevention of exposure through design; 3) Respiratory protection effectiveness for nanoparticles; and 4) Design Thinking Methodology with clients and/or customers in determining control solutions. Learning Outcomes After attending this session, participants will be able to: • Discuss where partnerships outside of IH practice have proved to be valuable in assessing and mitigating risk. • Choose to share our experiences with others and apply the experience of others.
