ANSI/AIHA Z9.4-1997 was developed to protect employees engaged in blasting in fixed location enclosures - or working in the vicinity of these enclosures - from significant risk of health impairment and physical injury due to explosions, high-velocity jets of abrasive-blasting particles, or moving equipment. It applies to all fixed-location abrasive blast enclosures in which an abrasive comes into contact with a surface by pneumatic pressure, hydraulic pressure, or centrifugal force. Adherence to this standard is expected to reduce exposure and disease associated with silicosis in abrasive-blasting operations because the standard prohibits use of silica sand as a blasting agent.
