Crystalline Silica Exposure Management
The challenges associated with enterprise risk assessment and management associated with exposure to respirable crystalline silica will be presented. Panel will discuss topics beyond exposure assessment and compliance with OSHA Standards, which will support the participants' understanding of how their exposure assessment outcomes can inform and prepare organizations to manage their risk.
New OSHA Crystalline Silica Standards
This presentation will help IH/OH professionals assess historical silica exposure data in order to make informed and efficient decisions based on the new OSHA silica standards.
Crystalline Silica: OSHA Method ID-142
This presentation will show how to establish acceptable ranges for agreement between analytical peaks in X-ray diffraction when using OSHA Method ID-142. It will also show how using these establish ranges will give more accurate results confirming quantitation for respirable crystalline silica.
Parallel Particle Impactors: Changing Respirable Sampling
This project used side by side respirable dust sampling to compare two different samplers with surprising results. The researchers found the newer PPI sampler not only matched the results of the current cyclone method, but exceeded the sampling efficiency of the traditional cyclone. Combined with the PPI versatility and ease of use, the PPI will streamline sampling and more accurately identify risk from respirable particulate exposure in the workplace. This research presentation will show how effectively off-the-shelf and simple do-it-yourself engineering controls reduced exposure to silica rich stone dust during controlled experiments using powered hand tools.

Silica and particulate exposure data from the World Trade Center recovery site, made available by OSHA, were summarized and analyzed. Exposure levels of health significance were identified.
Exposure Prevention in Underserviced Global Settings
In India, cottage industries grinding agate expose workers to silica dust. Most agate workers carry out grinding at home, therefore putting their families at risk as well. Through this pilot project, Workplace Health Without Bprders and its partners initiated the development of a toolkit of approaches to prevent occupational disease and employed locally sourced technical solutions that may be adapted to other industries and occupational diseases caused by dusts.
