Carbon Dioxide Exposure Evaluation in Craft Breweries
A case study that examines the exposure to carbon dioxide in various craft breweries will be presented. The analysis was completed with a real time video exposure monitoring technique that was able to combine with carbon dioxide exposure levels and physiological monitoring to rapidly identify areas of concern. Better identification of areas causing exposure can be met with more effective controls.
Sensor Triggered Instantaneous Whole Air Sampling
Experimental data will be presented and a description and visual images of the detection system/sampler designed and used for the study will be provided. Discussion of intraday exposure variability and why it is important to measure and understand this will also be included.
Hydrogen Interference with CO Sensors
Direct-reading instruments for carbon monoxide (CO) can be prone to a positive interference of proton generating gases such as hydrogen. This case study describes CO measurements using different instrumentation where initial surveys had indicated high carbon monoxide measurements and it was determined to be positive interference from hydrogen gas. The data demonstrate that hydrogen can affect certain CO sensors and can be a serious limitation in interpreting exposure monitoring data.
The Evolving Role of Sensors to Protect Worker Health
The application of direct-reading instruments to assess worker exposures is fundamentally changing our ability to protect worker health. Using interactive scenarios, the presenters will provide lessons learned about the selection of sensors and the interpretation of data. These discussions will showcase how the expert use of properly selected direct-reading instruments and shrewd interpretation of output is advancing our ability to protect worker health.

Real Time Detection of ppb Levels of Benzene
New real time detection method for benzene at ppb levels using a handheld GC/PID system with the ability to simultaneously provide real time data and collect samples for laboratory verification.
Evaluation of a Portable GC/PI Detector
Most portable direct-reading instruments are not capable of specifying individual chemical compounds or extremely bulky. Recently, a portable gas chromatograph/photoionization detector has been commercialized. This instrument is designed to measure individual VOC compounds, measure a worker's breathing zone exposure, and be portable. However, this instrument has not been fully evaluated via laboratory performance tests.

Conjoined Sensor Use to Evaluate Exposures The future of direct-reading devices and smartphone applications may help revolutionize the practice of industrial hygiene and safety evaluations. A promise of these technologies is that industrial hygienists can get immediate results and exposures can be reduced or eliminated without delay. Some of these technologies may be useful for screening, while others may provide an accurate concentration of a specific hazard.
