Aerosol hazards are pervasive in industry: organic dusts in forestry, agriculture, and food production, silica and mineral dusts in construction, and metal aerosols in refining and manufacturing constitute are just a few of the many inhalable aerosol hazards confronting the global workforce. Recently, advances in the science of aerosol measurement have allowed the development of new methods to estimate particle deposition directly in the respiratory tract. These methods cover a wide range of technologies, with applications from inhalable particles to nanoparticles, and from real-time measurements to chemical characterization. The objectives of this roundtable are to review the state of the science on aerosol deposition in the respiratory tract, to educate the occupational health community about these developments, and to provide a forum for discussion of needs and knowledge gaps surrounding this evolving science.
