Session Moderator: M. Phibbs, Chemscape

A challenging area for professionals is to determine how to effectively characterize the risk presented by an exposure and to convey this characterization in a way that has meaning to a particular stakeholder. The assignment of occupational exposure bands (OEB) has become standard practice in the pharmaceutical industry and is becoming a recognized method for hazard identification in other industries. A major role of OEBs is to provide an alternative benchmark for assessing exposure in the absence of an occupational exposure limit (OEL). Occupational exposure banding can be an effective risk communication tool in a comprehensive risk management program. Banding provides guidance for materials without authoritative OELs and is aligned with globally harmonized system for hazard communication. However, the essential part of such a program is to understand how compounds of different bands should be handled in the workplace. This session provides an overview of various OEB approaches, how risk can be communicated using OEBs and their implementation in the workplace.

Presentations:
