Presenter: M. O’Reilly, SUNY Empire State College

Industrial ecology is the science of analyzing resource use and its environmental, economic and cultural impacts during all stages of development (extraction, manufacture, transport, use and disposal). Industrial ecology integrates environmental health science, social science and economics in response to the challenges created by ever-increasing demand for energy, raw materials and clean water. Increasingly, worker health is being explicitly integrated into the evaluation of energy, water and material flows and sustainability goals. Industrial hygiene knowledge and skill, from understanding industrial processes to controlling occupational and environmental risk, are essential to industrial ecology. This presentation addresses what industrial hygiene brings to industrial ecology, what industrial hygiene can learn from industrial ecology, and why both fields should embrace each other.
