Crystalline silica exposure in industry continues to be a serious health risk to workers 77 years after the 1936 Congressional Investigation into Virginia’s Gauley Bridge Hawk’s Nest Tunnel tragedy, in which an estimated 1,500 to 2,000 workers died from silica exposure. Hydraulic fracturing is the most recent contributor to a continuing problem, according to a 2012 NIOSH study. A recent four-year Alberta study indicates the transnational dimension of the silica problem. Exposures from and control technologies for heavy equipment, demolition and various construction operations, NIOSH research on pavement milling machines and cutting fiber cement siding, will be discussed. This roundtable will discuss ramifications of the proposed rule, its PEL, and issues around the OEL and TLV exposure limits. The shared practical solutions, strategies, as well as recommended skills and competencies for a silica competent person will be beneficial to any company, particularly the small- to medium-sized companies without safety and health staffing..
