This presentation covers the recent trend in the EPA utilization of occupational exposure models to evaluate exposures to chemical toxicants. The accuracy of such models is often a key focus of regulators and industrial hygienists; however, the definition of accuracy varies between groups. Some models are designed to produce conservatively protective estimates, while others are designed to best replicate reality to the extent possible. The quality of an investigator's research on inputs determines the utility of a model for describing a given scenario. The exposure concentration predicted by models is most sensitive to the selected or calculated generation rate. The latter half of the presentation will review methods that exist for accurate estimate of generation rates in the industrial hygiene literature, as well as use of simplified chemical engineering equations to improve the accuracy of generation rate estimations. A short case study involving a spill of a binary mixture utilizing the chemical engineering equations will be demonstrated.
